  1. Mike Tyson:

Although Mike Tyson was not born of "noble birth" or "elevated status" (in fact, he was born into abject poverty in a tough, crime-filled neighborhood), he was born with incredible strength which brought him great potential as a fighter. At the peak of his professional boxing career he gained immense wealth ($300 million) and world-wide fame as the youngest ever heavyweight champ.

In many ways Tyson struggled against his fate- to revert to the life of crime that he was born into. He used fighting and controlled violence to somewhat ironically escape the poverty and violence of his home.

His tragic flaw is the flip-side of his strength: his physical power and rage which made him a vicious fighter in the ring which he was ultimately unable to control outside the ring: he was convicted of Sexual Assault in 1992. This "choice" and his inability to control himself led to three years in prison and the beginning of the end of his career.

Later, when trying to come back, Tyson's rage and animalistic fighting became even more notorious when he was disqualified from a fight after biting most of Evander Holyfield's ear off. Few people would fight him after that, and he became known more for his rage and lack of control than skill.

Tyson's "tragedy" was most definitely public: it was all over the media for years, and he suffered much shame. Tyson declared bankrupcy in 2003 and has been in and out of jail for the last ten years.

Finally, Tyson was enlightened, learning about his "true self". He said in 2005: "My whole life has been a waste- I've been a failure...I just want to escape. I really embarassed myself with my life."

  2. Shakespeare's Romeo Montague:

Romeo is a classic example of a tragic hero. For starters, he was born into a high class family, the Montagues. The Montagues were in the public eye because they were engaged in an ongoing feud with the other powerful family in Verona, the Capulets. Romeo was the sole Montague hier and a very likeable character who seemed to have it all going for him.

But, like all tragic heroes, Romeo was destined for failure. In the introduction of the tragedy Shakespeare describes Romeo and Juliet as "star-crossed lovers" which shows that their love is not destined to thrive. Romeo actually remarks, "Oh, I am fortune's fool!" when it occurs to him that the reason that his life is in chaos is that fate is against him.

Romeo's tragic flaw is that he is impulsive. For example, he marries Juliet after knowing her for less than a day. This extreme impulsivity brings about his downfall when he runs off to kill himself the second that he hears that his true love is dead. Had he waited a moment longer, Friar Lawrence's messenger would have arrived to tell him that Juliet wasn't really dead. This an example of a really bad choice made by the tragic hero. The audience, who know that Juliet isn't really dead, realize what will happen due to Romeo's choice and brace themselves for the catastrophic ending.

In the end, Romeo's impulsivity leads to a tragic double suicide. The tragedy for the town is that the feud between the two families causes them to lose what they loved the most. Lady Montague kills herself because of the grief. The audience feels an even greater impact because they realize that all of it could have been avoided if Romeo was not so impulsive. If Romeo could see what he did to Juliet and the town, he would realize that his decisions were rushed and really extreme, and he would be absolutely appalled with himself.

  3. Britney Spears

Know to the world as a mesmerizing singer and performer, Britney took the world by storm as she owned the 90's. She was established as a pop icon in the public eye, breaking sales records when she released her first album,"...Baby one more time."

But as she came to be known for reviving teen pop, it was fate that the young pop star would soon crash on the roller coaster of fame. The life of fame would get to her, resulting in both drug and alcohol abuse.

Then in 2007, Britney's destiny took place when she lost control abusing drugs, resulting in her admitting herself in a drug rehabilitation center. Latter that year she also lost custody of both her children.

After both incidents in 2007, one night Britney shaved her head with electric clippers at a hair salon in Tarzana, California. This resulted in her readmitting into a treatment facility.

After Britney's struggles from the life in the spot lights, she learned about her true self latter stating,"I truly hit rock bottom. Till this day I don't think that it was alcohol or depression. I was like a bad kid running around with ADD."

  4. Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson was born with an amazing talent that achieves unimaginable success early in his life.Jackson is soon called the king of pop and many people looked up to him as a hero.

Jackson's father was a very hard man. he beat his son Michael quite often. and because of his abusive father jackson is fated for the rest of his life with many more challenging issues.

as Jackson starts to become an adult his black skin looks lighter. and over time his skin color turns white. some people say he had a disease. some people say that he had several surgeries so that when he looked in the mirror he wouldn't see his fathers face. later Michael has numbers of plastic surgeries. 2005 Michael goes to court. he was accused of molesting a 13 year old boy. these are some of Michaels flaws that lead him to failure in struggle. also these are choices he made that bring about destruction.

the tragedy of michael being accused of molestation is private and public. from that day, what was left of his career was gone and he later dies of an overdose on June 25, 2009.

  5. One modern example of a tragic hero is the now-infamous Mel Gibson.

After studying at the Australian National Institute of Dramatic Art, Gibson went on to become a celebrated actor in films such as Braveheart, We Were Soldiers, and Signs, garnering comparisons to actors like Cary Grant and Robert Redford. As a big-name star, he was constantly in the public eye and he had the potential to help people, like giving his time to charities and using his status to call attention to important issues.

But his tragic flaw, an uncontrollable temper, combined with underlying prejudice, caused his downfall from Hollywood golden boy to weekly tabloid fodder.

In July 2006, Gibson was arrested for DUI while speeding in his vehicle with an open container of alcohol. While under the influence, he made anti-semitic remarks to the arresting officer. He later apologized for his "despicable" behavior, saying that his comments had been blurted out in a moment of insanity.

For Gibson, this was essentially the beginning of the end.

In July 2010, comments that I do not wish to post here (although I'm sure you've probably heard them) were allegedly recorded during a phone conversation with Gibson's girlfriend.

At the end of the entire fiasco, which contained many more rage-filled messages and accusations of domestic assault, Gibson was barred from coming near his girlfriend and their baby daughter due to a restraining order. Gibson was also revealed to be a prejudiced, violent person, one with many issues to be resolved. The choices that he made caused the public's opinion of him to drop exponentially, and I know many people (including myself) that will not watch his films.

All of the events described above were most certainly public. For a time, a person could not go out in the world without seeing a magazine or hearing a TV report detailing Gibson's misdeeds.

So far, he has not made any comments regarding the tape scandal, but he says about the anti-semitic remarks: "I am a public person, and when I say something, either articulated and thought out, or blurted out in a moment of insanity, my words carry weight in the public arena. As a result, I must assume personal responsibility for my words and apologize directly to those who have been hurt and offended by those words."

  7. Kratos, Fallen God of War. *God of War game series*

Kratos was never born into a glorious life. At age seven he and his brother were taken by the Spartans for brutal training and immersed in their world of survival. He and his brother were separated, absolving Kratos of any comfort or weakness. He had the makings of a hero from day one.

Zeus (his father but unknown to him) guided him with a silent yet watchful eye. Kratos soon became a commander of the Spartan army and well known for his merciless battle tactics. After almost dying, he called upon Ares to save him, damning him and creating a debt that would never be paid.

Tricked into slaying his wife and child by Ares, Kratos set out on a rampage, killing all in his way and eventually the great god himself. Athena made him the new God of War however his journey would not end. After Zeus killed Kratos, percieving him as a threat, Kratos began his journey out of Hades and to Mount Olympus where his path of vengeance would cost the gods, titans, and eventually the rest of the planet their lives. Athena sought to use the power of hope to become the one god after the others were slain, but Kratos in an act of selflessness gave his life to bestow hope upon the world. It was Pandora who enlightened him and gave him the power to forgive himself for his past wrongdoings.

His determination is defined by this quote in the confrontation with Zeus: "The hands of death could not defeat me, the Sisters of Fate could not hold me, and you will not see the end of this day, i will have my revenge."

I feel this is the perfect example of a tragic hero, as Kratos is betrayed by all and in the end must give his life, so that life itself can live on and humanity would be free from the tyranny of the Greek gods.

  9. LIndsay Lohan:

Lindsay Lohan became famous with an elevated status as a talented actress and model at a very young age. Lindsay has been in the public eye since her youth as a budding star. She began modeling at the age of two and starred in her first major motion picture at age 11. So began a life of fame, fortune, and trouble for the young star. She starred in roles such as The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, and Mean Girls. Lohan is famous country-wide and has received strong media attention all her life.

The fate of most young stars Today often involves getting into trouble with both the media and drugs and alcohol. Drugs and alcohol can be overpowering and can put lives on the wrong track; headed for destruction. Lindsay's major stardom was the start of her downfall because she was so heavily influenced by the spotlight.

Lindsay's tragic flaw was her ignorance. She has a false sense of invincibility and over-confidence, thinking that certain rules do not apply to her, and being arrogant in the sense that she thinks nothing can "touch her". She denies doing things wrong and has an excuse for every occasion. This flaw Lohan possesses has caused and contributed to her addictions.

Lindsay makes faulty decisions that lead to the destruction of her mind, body, and career. She was arrested twice in 2007 for DUI, found having possession of cocaine, and taken to rehab three times. This peaked public interest in Lindsay. In 2009, she missed court dates and addiction therapy sessions. In 2010 Lindsay violated probation and was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 days in rehab. She stayed less time than was expected and now needs to take random weekly drug tests.

Lohan has attracted significant publicity surrounding her social life, most o it negative. She was not able to keep all family matters present, because the media has been so thorough in investigating her life. Many people look forward to her next mistake. Her family deals in their own way and Lindsay's parents divorce could have contributed to her problems. Lindsay Lohan had the potential to be a great star but she ruined her life with drugs and alcohol.

  11. Nancy Botwin of the television series WEEDS:

Though Nancy Botwin was never born into a high status she seemed to have this fate where she had an undeniable attraction to danger. No matter what the situation someone wanted Botwin dead like in season 6 where her husband's campaign planner tries to get Botwin shot but ends up hitting her son, Shane.

Nancy's impulsive behavior gets her and the people around her into trouble. Sometimes her family might have to leave their home or get hurt all because Botwin doesn't think things through. For example, her decision to get rid of the competition and burn their house leads to everyone in Agrestic, California, to lose their homes.

If you haven't realized it yet, Nancy Botwin makes many stupid judgment calls. The biggest one of her mistakes was to become a pot dealer to support her family after her first husband's death. This one decision decides her family's whole life. Just because of this everyone runs into troubles such as dating DEA agents, A demented son, gangs, and plenty more.

Finally, the light has shone on Nancy Botwin and she realizes the mistakes she has made over the past few years when she has a baby boy and her other son kills a woman. She sees her new son as a way to start new and prevent him from becoming like Shane. Not only does Shane's killing frighten her but she sees it as an opportunity to start new.

Quickly, the Botwin family leaves their home in California and flee to Canada to begin a new life with a new name. Shane's execution of Pilar becomes noticed by the public and soon enough the Botwin family is being hunted by the FBI. What the FBI doesn't realize is they're searching for a dead identity because the Botwins have become the Newmans.

Nancy Botwin is a prime example of a Tragic Hero the way she puts her family in danger then realizes the harmful affects of her judgment and tries to start new after a tragic enlightenment.

  12. Juliet Capulet
    From Shakespeares "Romeo and Juliet"

Juliet Capulet is a perfect example of a tragic hero. She was born into a wealthy Capulet family, who with their rivaling wealthy family, the Montague's, who are royalty in the town of Verona. These two family's rivalry with each other put them in the public opinion. Like her "star-crossed love", Romeo, Juliet is also an only child to the Capulet's who wish her to marry Paris, but Juliet is having none of it.

Juliet struggles with many things in her life that pose as obstacles. Her parents do not want what she wants and are controlling of her. Also, she is not allowed to be "in love" with the person whom she loves. Romeo and Juliet's relationship was described as "star crossed", which basically means that their love could never last, and won't last. With all of these struggles in her life through an unsupportive family, and not publicizing her love for Romeo, Juliet tragically is prone to suffering.

Juliet has a flaw that is the root of all her problems. She is very dramatic, and rather unstable. The moment that she lays eyes on Romeo, she claims to have "fallen in love", leading to the root of all her problems. Also, when her parents wish her to marry Paris, she at one point in the play, releashes her energy. She states that she is going to "run away" and "kill herself" if she had to marry Paris. This event leads to her father "disowning her" because of her dramatic actions. In an effort to runaway with Romeo she plots to pretend to be dead, through the help of Friar Laurence, which eventually leads to the true death of Romeo. At the sight of Romeo dying, she commits suicide by stabbing herself with a "happy dagger".

Juliet illustrates free will by her desire to be with Romeo. It is againsts her parents will to marry him, showing her free spirit. She makes a pivotal choice in a desperate attempt to be with her love. She drinks a potion that will put her in a state of death for a period of time. And of course, as tragedies go, the message was not relayed to Romeo, who sees his dead love, and upon the sight of that kills himself. The choice that she made bring the deaths of Romeo, Paris, and Juliet.

This affair is both public and private. Juliet's love includes family stuggles, and sexual transgressions with Romeo. Romeo and Juliet are secretly wed, and the fact that Juliet refuses to marry Paris leads to her being disowned by her father. Juliet's relationship also impacts the feud, and intensifies it for the reader/play-goer. Because of all these reasons, Juliet is a prime example of a tragic hero.

  14. Syd Barrett

Syd was the founder of the musical group Pink Floyd. He became the victim of his own success because his own musical genius led to his mental illness and withdrawal from society.

When Pink Floyd started out, Syd was the leader and contributed most of their material. By the time they released their first album, the group had caught the eye of the public and had made them an underground success. But......

Syd didnt know how to handle all the stress of being known. So he allegedly dabbled heavily with drug use to try to relieve the stress. A choice that led to his mental decline. This tragedy was made both private and public with his antics on stage and by being a real pain to work with the rest of the band.

He lived in seclusion for over 30 years until he died in 2006. During this time he tried to reclaim the normal life he once had. But he was never left alone by his insisitng fans.

The loss of Syd had a major impact on Pink Floyd for better or worse and he will always be remembered by the public and his fans.

  15. A Modern Day Tragic Hero-Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie is a good example of a tragic hero. She was born into a wealthy and famous family and was raised in the public eyes of Hollywood.

Richie was known about when she was yonger, but as she grew older she became more and more known for her party girl ways. Like staying up clubbing, drinking and doing drugs at all hours of the night.

Her partying ways caused more damage to her than good. In 2003, Richie was arrested for possesion of heroin and not long after she was caught driving under the influence. She also possesed marijuana and prescription vicodin in the car with her.

After being charged and arrested for both incidents she served time in both a jail cell and a rehab facility...even if it wasn't for long.

Since her last stint in jail, Richie has learned her lesson and has gotten her life together. Over the last few years she has had no press about recent drug or alcohal use. Instead she has traded in her party girl ways to stay at home with her and boyfriend Joel Madden's two young children Harlow and Sparrow Richie-Madden.

  16. Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars)

Anakin Skywalker was a prodigious young jedi. He had just saved Chancellor Palpatine's life, which made him heroic. In return, Palpatine gave him a place in the jedi council, giving him his elevated status. His wife Padme was also expecting a baby.

One night he had a dream that his wife would die when she had her baby. This dream was similar to ones he had had about his mother, who died as the dream had predicted. He believed that this was a prophecy that would come true. Unknown to him, Palpatine was also trying to convert him to the dark side by being friendly to him.

Eventually, Chancellor Palpatine fooled him into thinking he could save Padme by converting to the dark side. This major error in judgement, as he believed becoming evil would help him keep his wife alive.

His next choice brought about plenty of destruction. He was ordered by Palpatine to take an army and go about killing jedi who were not on the dark side. When Padme went to him to talk some sense into him, she brought Obi-Wan Kenobi hidden along with her (She did not know). He accused her of betraying him and choked until she was unconscious using the force.

He then battled with Obi-Wan Kenobi and lost three of his limbs in the process. He was later informed that he had caused the death of Padme.

Anakin Skywalker is the perfect instance of a tragic hero. In his attempt to prevent his prophecy from coming true, he caused it to happen by killing Padme. This is similar to how Oedipus killed his father while trying not to kill him.

  17. Ted Kennedy:

Ted Kennedy is a great example of a tragic hero. He was born into high status, youngest of 9 and his family was well known. His mother Rose was the daughter of Boston mayor, John "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald and his father,Joseph P Kennedy, was a millionaire businessman.

Ted and his family experienced many tragedies involving the death of all three of his brothers and one of his sisters. He struggled against the fate of being the only surviving son with intense preasure from his parents to succeed. These incidents became known as the "Kennedy Curse" and he struggled to overcome that the rest of his life.

His most major error in judgement which changed his career forever and ruined his chances of becoming president was the Chappaquiddick incident. He drove his car off a bridge which lead to a passenger Mary Jo Kopechne drowning, and there were claims that Kennedy was drunk and tried to cover it up.

Throughout his career he made poor judgement decisions involving alcohol. Most agree that resisting temptation was a problem for him. He himself has said his private behavior was "indefensible".

Even though he had issues throughout his life with errors in judgement and tragedy he proves that it is possible to work though them and is able to make himself known for his great work as a Massachusetts senator.

  18. Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods is an excellent example of a modern day tragic hero. Woods was only born to an average middle-class family, but elevated his status by working his way up through the levels of amateur and then professional golf all the way to the top. He is now considered to be one of the best and most successful golfers of all time.

Despite this seeming greatness, however, Tiger Woods had one huge and ultimately fatal flaw: his impulses, or, more specifically, his inability to control them. Woods is quite obviously a philanderer at heart, and he has stated that in the years of fame prior to his downfall, he felt entitled, and thought he could do whatever he wanted.

This belief of his, however, has proved not to be the case, as his choice to have affairs with more than 100 various women has become known by anyone who caught even a glimpse of the news in late 2009. This choice was wholly his own, and illustrates his free will to make his own decisions.

This tragedy, or rather its exposure, has been both public and private. Publicly, it has destroyed his image, and caused the loss of many of his largest sponsorships. It was just as destructive privately; he was divorced by his wife, and announced a hiatus from professional golfing, without giving any sense of when he might return.

Tiger Woods is now seeking to turn his life around, which he plans to do through the practice of Buddhism, the religion he was originally brought up with by his mother. He hopes that through this practice, he can relearn how to control his urges and get his life back on track.

  19. Prince Hamlet of Denmark

Hamlet was the prince of Denmark who had sworn to avenge the king, his father, after discovering that he had been murdered by Claudius, his uncle. Claudius killed Hamlet's father with the intent of taking the throne for himself. Hamlet had discovered this after talking to the ghost of his father one night, but his doubts about the ghost stopped him from going to kill Claudius immediately.

Eventually, however, Hamlet confirmed Claudius's guilt in this crime, so he decided that he would kill him. When Hamlet approached Claudius later, he found him praying, so he did not take this opportunity, believing that he would have been sent to heaven if he killed him then. Had he decided to take his life at this moment, this most likely would have prevented the tragedy that occurred at the end of the play. But he did not, and so he suffered the consequences for his error in judgment.

At a later point in the play, Hamlet went to confer with his mother, the queen, but he discovers someone spying on him from behind a tapestry. Believing it to be the king, he takes his sword and stabs the spy, but it was actually Polonius, a trusted counselor for the king. For this crime, Hamlet was sent to England, but supposedly, pirates attacked his ship and so he returned to Denmark. Though his choice which killed Polonius was unintentional, it could have potentially ended his struggle, but fate seemed to allow him to continue with it.

At the end of the play, Hamlet has a sword-fencing duel with Laertes, the son of Polonius, who seeks revenge for Polonius's death, but unknown to Hamlet, Claudius had set up a plan to kill Hamlet. Laertes's sword had been poisoned, so Hamlet would die when he was injured. Also, Claudius poisoned a goblet which he would give to Hamlet to drink from if he won the duel. However, the plan didn't go completely as he expected it to. The queen took a drink from the goblet, and died, and Hamlet was injured by Laertes. But he did not die immediately, and he manages to poison Laertes with his own sword, killing him. Then Hamlet proceeded to kill Claudius by stabbing him and forcing him to drink from the goblet. Claudius dies, and Hamlet succumbs to the poison, dying as well.

This scene is very tragic, for four people die, three of which are from the royal family. Fate seemed to be against Hamlet, because his struggle had eventually led to much destruction even though it could have very well been prevented. If Hamlet killed Claudius while he was praying, he could have prevented Laertes, the queen, and himself from dying, but his mistake in judgment led all of these deaths to happen. Hamlet's struggle had been brought to a bitter end.

  20. Lady Gaga.

Gaga, born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, was not born into a highly respected or well known family, instead she created her own fame. She dropped out of college to pursue her love for music and her debut album, The Fame, was released in 2008. It became number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and her hit singles "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" became international number one hits. Gaga was also named number 4 on the Rolling Stone's list of the Top 100 Most Influential People in the United States, and is also ranked the second most powerful musician in the world. At this point, Lady Gaga is a household name.

Unfortunately, Lady Gaga has admitted on numerous occasions that she struggles with alcoholism and drug abuse. The troubles started in her teenage years and have been haunting her since. The added stress of being an international pop star really hasn't helped her case. She has been caught drunk publicly almost on a regular basis and continues to be pounded by the media for it.

Performing at the Grammy's, Lady Gaga dons a strap-on and quickly grabs everybody's attention. The rumors of Gaga being a man might never be let alone. Her conscious decision to do so, along with her crazy outfits, have people talking and ridiculing her 24/7. When she pulled that stunt, she lost a lot of fans. People tend to question her sanity, but she jokes about it when she modeled for Q magazine wearing yet another strap-on, saying, "We all know that one of the biggest talking points of the year, so why not give them what they want?"

Lady Gaga was hospitalized for exhaustion in January of this year. Therefore, she cancelled the rest of her tour and took a break for herself, and a much needed one at that. She claims she has stopped using alcohol as a crutch and is finding more productive ways to manage her stress.

Nowadays, we see Gaga everywhere. Her mistakes and her downfalls, along with her accomplishments and personal life, are all caught on camera. She's a human just like the rest of us, the only difference being that her life is in the public eye. However, she is back on her feet performing and enjoying herself as she was before.

  21. Michael Vick

Michael Vick is a prime example of a tragic hero today. Vick is currently the quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, but he didn't get to where he is today without controversy. Vick was the second of four children to two unmarried teenagers. His mother worked two jobs to support him but still required public financial aid. They lived in a crime ridden neighborhood in public housing. Starting at birth, Vick was surrounded by crime.

As Vick grew older, he found a way to escape his troubled surroundings: football. Vick was a high school star and recieved multiple division one scholarships. Choosing to stay as close to home as possible, Vick accepted the offer from Virginia Tech. When he left the public housing project on a college football scholarship, he was viewed as a hero in his community. Vick went on to be a standout in college and later became the first african-american quarterback selected number one in the NFL draft.

Life was sweet for Vick, but his troubled background would soon catch up with him. He made poor choices and hung out with the wrong people. Two of Vick's friends were caught distributing large amounts of marajuana in a truck belonging to Vick. He also failed a drug test later in his carrer and had a clear problem with drugs. But perhaps the most infamous chapter in Vick's troubled life was his dogfighting. On a drug search in Vick's house, police found out that he and his friends had been running a dogfighting business (called the "Bad Newz Kennel") at Vick's house. He was sentenced to 23 months in prison on dogfighting charges. The public watched as Vick's carrer and life went down the toilet. (After being released from prison, he filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy).

Vick's 23 month sentence was shortned to 19 because Vick entered a drug treatment program to deal with his drug problem. Also, Vick has started two charities to try to help kids living in troubled neighborhoods from making the same mistakes he made. Vick has held public appologies and press confrences and truly does feel remorse for the dogfighting, drug problems, and controversy in his life. Michael Vick is considered to have worked the hardest to try to rebuild and repair his life, but along the way changing the many mistakes he has made. Many people have forgiven Michael Vick because of the effort he has put in to change his life and for some people, he is a hero again.

  22. Michael Jackson

Growing up in a working class family living in the suburbs of Chicago, Michael Jackson's birth was far from noble and elevated. Being one of ten children, Jackson grew up with a father who played in a local R & B band and many siblings who were also musically inclined, giving him the potential he needed to get into the music business. After he sang at his first talent show soon Jackson's family realized his great musical potential.

With his family's support behind him, Jackson began to practice relentlessly with his borthers in their soon-to-be famous band called the Jackson 5. Their father, a stern, hard-to-please man, presssured all of his sons, especially young Michael, and barely allowed any of them to have a true childhood. There are even interviews in which Jackson talks about being physcially and verbally abused by his father.

Self confidence and self esteem were definitely not a part of Jackson's personality. Since the spotlight was always on him, even as a child, he began to obsess over his appearance, having numerous plastic surgeries performed on him as he grew older. Though he felt these would improve his view of himself, he was never completely satisfied with what he saw in the mirror and therefore never got over this struggle.

Out of all of Jackson's poor decisions, the most horrific one has to be the molestation of children on two accounts. The first accusation was never proved true, but the second trial landed him as guilty, causing him harsh consequences. One of the most prominent of these has to be the public eye's view of him after these trials, and the swarms of fans who began to lose hope in the musical genius.

On June 25, 2009 Jackson was found past out on his bed in his Californian home. The paramedics desperately tried to revive him, but they were too late. Michael Jackson was pronounced dead and when the news hit the public, everyone was truly shocked and devastated. Though some of his actions may not deserve to be revered, the man who gave us all of his catchy songs and slick dance moves will always make an impact on the general public.

  23. A perfect example for a modern day tragic hero is Bill Clinton. Bill clinton was not of noble birth and was actually raised by a stepfather and a mother. He recalls his stepfather being a drunk and abusing his mother and that he intervened several times. He had struggled against this but it ultmately made him a tougher more resiliant person. Two influential moments in his life that geared him towards politics was meeting Jon F. Kennedy and listening to Martin Luther King Jr's "i have a dream" speech.

Clinton in his presidency had been subject to sexual allegations with one of his interns. Clinton could not come to admit this and and denied these allegations under the oath he took and this led to his impeachment. As a result his presidency was lost, he has a troubled relationship with his wife and daughter until this day, and people viewed him differently for years.

Bill clinton has realzed the mistakes he made and inflicted on his family and fellow Americans. During the 2008 election, he advocated on behalf of his wife, some worried hima as en ex-president he was too active, but this was something that he needed. I believe even if people did not like this that clinton was appreciated again.

  24. Bristol Palin:

Bristol Palin is a tragic hero because of the mistakes she has made in the public eye. Her mother, Sarah Palin, was chosen to be the vice presidential candidate alongside John McCain. Bristol has not always been in the public eye, but once her mother was chosen, the media had a frenzy when they discovered Bristol was pregnant at the age of seventeen in 2008.

Bristol has difficulties with life because she is a teenager, a mother, and a major public personality with her boyfriend Levi Johnston. Palin and Johnston say they want to live a normal life with their son, Tripp, out of the public eye, but instead they have done the opposite. So every move she makes, everyone will see it.

They recently got engaged, but instead of doing it privately, they announced it on the cover of People Magazine. Within a few days, it was called off because of poor choices made by Levi Johnston. Bristol said that the final straw for her was “He’s just obsessed with the limelight and I got played.” (People Magazine)

Even though Bristol says this, she is starring in the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars, which is in the limelight. She is being hypocritical in what she says she wants, and what she ends up doing. Only time will tell what choices she will make in the future.

  25. A quite fitting example of a tragic hero, or a tragic heroine, I should say, is Joan of Arc. This remarkable young lady was not born into nobility. In fact, she was one of five children born to a farmer. However, she had a very special gift. She could talk to angels.
She began hearing the "voices" of St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret when she was about 12 years old. They told her that it was her divine destiny to free her country, France, from the English, and help the dauphin (heir to the throne) gain the French throne. She was told to cut her hair, dress in a man's uniform, and take up arms. When she announced this prophecy to King Charles VII, he offered her a sword and agreed to let her go to Orleans, where the French were under siege. It was the end of April, 1429. There, as captain, she led her troops to a miraculous victory. Her status elevated from there as she won vicotry after victory and became one of the most feared women of the time. Some English troops even fled the battle field when they realized Joan of Arc was the fierce figure heading towards them.
Perhaps, though, hearing angels was her fatal flaw. In the eyes of the English, it most certainly was. As a devoted Christian, she believed righteously in her actions and listened to everything the angels said and did not say. But the English were convinced that she was guilty of witchcraft and heresy. She was tried, convicted, and burned at the stake on May 30, 1431, at the age of 19.
She was quoted saying, "One life is all we have, and we live it as we believe in living it. But to sacrifice what you are and to live without belief, that is a fate more terrible than dying."
As for her choices, she did choose to listen to the angles, which eventually led to her downfall. She did this to many extents. For example, while she was being held in prison, she was treated cruelly for not removing her men's clothing. She kept it on because the angels had not yet said to remove them. Was it a bad idea? Most likely - at that time, women wearing men's clothing was believed by some to be a crime against God. Therefore, her choices did bring about her destruction because they were used as evidence against her during trial.
The tragedy indeed affected her family, for they never thought they would have a daughter to be frowned upon by society, but also many people around the world were affected due to her infamousy. People were shocked at this woman who would have such audacity.
Her true identity? People did not see it until 1456, in a later second trial, in which she was pronounced innocent of the charges against her. Before the second trial, people were embarrassed for her. Now, we look upon her as a true hero.
She now has inspired others around the world for her faith in what was right, her tremendous success in the Hundred Years War, and her great maturity.
The higher force and greater cirumstances were the English, and men more specifically, who did not believe that women should even step out of their homes. She struggled to convince them that she was meant to redeem France, but of course, she was destined to fall at the feet of the English; literally. All because she listened to the angels...

  28. Ludwig van Beethoven

A great example of a tragic hero is a man by the name of Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven was born into a dutch family of nobility in the field of music. He was named after his grandfather, a bass singer. His family had a reputation throughout Holland in the musical world playing their music in palaces and theatres. The Beethoven family played in the palace of prince Elector. Ludwig's first teacher was his father, Johann Beethoven. It is said that Beethoven was seen weeping at the piano after being pushed so hard. However, his work payed off.

Beethoven's music became known all throughout Europe. He displayed his talent to the public until one dreadful day where he was diagnosed with a severe form of tinnitus, a ringing in his years. The ringing progressively got worse over the years till the point where he could not hear his own music. Even though it is not documented, it is said that at the end of one of his performances of the ninth symphony, he had to be turned around to see the audience applauding his music. They had been applauding for almost two minutes before he noticed, he began to cry. Beethoven's last public concert was when he attempted to play his own piano concerto no. 5, but failed.

Beethoven was given a magnificent talent at birth and took advantage of his musical grace. He music was known all throughout europe Ludwig's music had an immense impact on the musical world and is still played throughout the world in numerous famous orchestras. His work was stopped after losing his ability to hear, but kept trying. He created several famous pieces while he was deaf, but his numerous illnesses were the death of him. Ludwig van Beethoven will go down in history as a musical mastermind and is a perfect definition of a tragic hero.

  29. Abraham Lincoln:

An excellent example of a tragic heroe is Abraham Lincoln. The president was most famous for abolishing slavery in the United States. After the Civil War, it was on Lincoln's shoulders to reunify the States. He was well known for his lenient compromises towards the Southern states in order not to make them angry.

Lincoln struggled with the fact that the entire Congress was against his lenient plan to bring back the South. In order to keep the Wade-Davis Bill from going into action, Lincoln uses the pocket veto to overpower Congress.

Abraham Lincoln, being president at the time of the Civil war, had an abundant amount of southerners who were enraged with what he had done to their land, families, and lifestyle. By abolishing slavery (the main source of the south's economy) so quickly, it brought the south into a deeper hole than they had been in.

Not only did he ruin the economy of the south, but his army also flattened the southern cities and towns, leaving them with nothing. Someone was bound to react to Lincoln's actions.

Lincoln realized the south's devastation and decided that the lenient unification after the war was best. It may have been to late though for poor Lincoln.

Sadly, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on at a theatre with his wife by John Wilkes Boothe. The murderer believed that abolishing slavery was wrong and was a strong supporter of the Confederate states. One of the United States greatest presidents had died that fateful day and his family, and his country, would never be the same.

  30. This example provides little to say, but flamboyant syntax would not compensate for any lesser a subject. (I hope that statement doesn't make me a hypocrite. Also, I apologize up front if my tongue seems to be too deeply lodged in my cheek)

Prometheus, according to Greek mythology, was a Titan born to Iapetus and Themis. As a god, he embodied craftiness and foresight. While many of the Titans were sent to Tartarus after rising against Zeus, the fact that Prometheus had not sided with them caused him to be spared. As for the prophecy that Zeus would be overthrown by one of his sons, Promethius kept that to himself.

Zeus then charged him with the task of shaping mankind from water and earth--clay--and Prometheus readily complied. However, Prometheus developed an unexpected affection for his creations, and he was ready at any time to empower them further; Zeus did not share this affection and wanted no part in giving mortals power which they very well might let run wild. Somewhere within Prometheus's judgment, his love for man outweighed his fear of Zeus (who was the end-all king of gods, mind you); long story made short, he first stole for them the god-withheld ceremony and luxury of cooked meat. Later, he proceeded to abscond with fire from Zeus's lightning. This he also bestowed upon man, effectively thwarting Zeus (to a degree) and providing the human race with the seed for all the lunacy that followed in the two thousand plus years. (Ergo, he became Greek mythology's answer to Satan the lying snake. This is completely unrelated, but it might help with the clarification of Why This Was Bad.)

There were, in fact, consequences for his actions. One was Pandora, the first woman, created to bring misfortune and troubles to man (no witty remarks, thank you). Prometheus himself was sentenced to the following:

-remain bound to a boulder for eternity
-recieve a daily visit from a large bird
-endure said daily large bird pecking out and eating liver, only to have liver regrow overnight
    -day after day after day

    (Heracles killed the bird eventually.)

I dearly hope I've covered all the points I was meaning to (it really is a great story) but I will be logged off in a minute and a half so this is not the time for revisions.

  31. OJ Simpson:

Orenthal James (O.J.) Simpson is an example of a real life tragic hero. Simpson's legendary football playing and acting career landed him in full view of the public eye. His fate started to make his life take a turn for the worse when he was accused of the murders of Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman and of robbing a hotel-casino in Las Vegas.

Simpson's life was going well. He was a famous football player having played both in college on the USC team and professionally in the NFL on both the Buffalo Bills and the 49ers. His amazing talent for football earned him prestigious awards like the Heisman Trophy (1968), Maxwell Award (1968), and NFL MVP (1973). In addition to this his acting career took off and he had parts in movies such as Capricorn One, The Klansman, and The Towering Inferno.

Being a football player likely tended to make Simpson somewhat aggressive, a tragic flaw that probably could have led to the events that caused his downfall.

On June 12, 1994 his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman were found dead and Simpson was accused of murdering them. The fact that this trial was broadcasted live on national television made this the single most publicized trial in American history. Though the jury found Simpson not guilty, there was enough evidence to convince most people that he was in fact the murderer.

As if this were not enough, in September 2007 he also committed an armed robbery at the Palace Station hotel-casino where he stole sports memorabilia. He was found guilty of this crime and was sentenced to 33 years in prison.

OJ Simpson was destined for fame with his football and acting talents. Unfortunately his tragic flaw brought an awful end to his largely successful career.

He fought a monster named Grendal, and tore it's arm off, and Grendal died, but Grendal's mother, also a monster came back and killed some people in revenge, which made Beowulf look bad, but then he followed and killed the mother of Grendal as well in an underwater fight. He was a tragic character, in as much as, when he was an old man he died fighting a dragon alone after his men all ran away in fear. But he did kill the dragon.
He died alone with no one behind him.

He was a great hero but died a tragic death because his men did not stay with him
